The Dragons’ offensive barrage was led by a roster of local talent, showcasing the depth and potential in the community.
Coach Carl Reynolds Reflects on a Stellar Performance
In an interview following the match, Head Coach Carl Reynolds praised the team’s outstanding performance and highlighted the contributions of local talent. “Our performance was very good in parts, and I believe we could have scored even more goals,” Reynolds remarked. The Dothan Dragons showcased their offensive power with goals from Daniel Olivera, who scored twice, Alec Palanjian, Alexander Blanche, Aaron Garrote, and Gabino Morin. “The new guys who came in were fantastic and proved all their hard work and dedication on the field,” Reynolds continued. The strategy of giving more minutes to local players paid off handsomely, allowing the team to rest key players while demonstrating the depth and talent within the squad. Reynolds emphasized, “It shows that this club isn’t just about recruiting players from all over the world; there’s a lot of local talent here that needs to be given the opportunity.” He also noted that integrating local talent is crucial for the team’s identity and fan connection.
Local Stars Steal the Spotlight
Alec Palanjian: Man of the Match
Alec Palanjian, a Dothan native, was the undisputed “man of the match,” as named by Head Coach Reynolds. Playing as left back, Alec demonstrated exceptional skill and determination. He described his goal with enthusiasm, “I intercepted a pass in the midfield, drove the ball up, and made a quick back and forth with Hector Nieto, who squared the ball up for me to knock it in.” Alec also credited the incredible home crowd for his inspired performance, stating, “It was very special to make my home debut in front of such a supportive crowd in my home city.”
Reflecting on his development under Head Coach Carl Reynolds, Alec shared, “I’ve learned so much from Carl, both tactically and in terms of my position. The main thing is the confidence he instills in us.”
Gabino Morin: Penalty Precision
Gabino Morin from Slocomb, Alabama, also made his mark by scoring a penalty kick with remarkable composure. Describing the moment, Gabino said, “It was nerve-racking, but I studied the keeper’s movements and knew where I was going to place the ball. The fireworks after my goal were incredible and made it even more special.”
Gabino emphasized the importance of daily sharpness and the high standards maintained by the team, attributing his growth to the environment created by Coach Reynolds and the leadership of his own teammates.
More on the Local Talent
Several other local players contributed to the astounding win, including Ty Powell, Center Back from Dothan, AL, who reflected on how the opportunity to play in front of his home crowd meant the world to him, and he is learning so much from the team and leadership of the club. Also from down the road in Enterprise, AL, Diego Sammur, Center Defensive Midfielder, asserted that playing in this game with such quality players has pushed him to continue improving and getting better every day. Finally, Mason Roe, Striker from Dothan, AL showed off his speed and contributions to the stadium with a fabulous assist, and he will now continue to improve before heading off to his first season of Division 2 soccer at Auburn University in Montgomery. “Playing with ex-professionals, future professionals, and top college players has been life-changing,” he says when reflecting on his experience with Dothan United.
Looking Ahead
When asked about the victory, Coach Carl asserted that it has boosted the team’s confidence and morale, also demonstrating that no starting spot is guaranteed with the amount of depth the team holds. This only pushes each player to work harder. Coach Reynolds emphasized the importance of maintaining focus and continuing to work hard every day to achieve their goals for the season, which include meticulous planning, scouting, and keeping players motivated.
As the Dragons continue their journey, the integration of local talent remains a priority, enriching both the team and the community. The support from the city of Dothan plays a pivotal role in the team’s motivation and success, creating a unique and vibrant soccer culture.
The Dothan Dragons’ next game is set for Wednesday, June 19 at 7PM against East Atlanta FC and fans are eager to see if the team can maintain their winning momentum.
